In Ho'ala Huna, marriage is not confused with a wedding ceremony. Kahuna recognize that no priest, judge, or minister can marry anyone. Only the participants can marry each other. It is a sacred effort to become spiritually united in a place of harmony and Divine love. The process consists of four stages.
- The first stage begins when the participants commit to become married. They engage the services of a kahuna who will teach them what marriage is, what it means to commit to the process of marriage, and the skills required to transform a relationship into a marriage.
- The second stage begins with the wedding ceremony during which, members of the participant's 'ohana are asked to bless the proposed union and support its process.
- After the wedding the participants begin the work of becoming married, which usually takes many years and a lot of work. This is the third stage.
- The fourth stage happens many years later when it is obvious that the participants have become one in spirit. At this time the 'ohana gathers to recognize and honor the successful completion of the union and the married people as kupuna or people of wisdom. From this point forward the kupuna are looked to for spiritual guidance and take upon themselves the responsibility of educating the family's children in the most important lessons of all - "how to be empowered human beings."
All weddings are performed on a donation basis.
